The drive can be started at either end. Drive north from Fredericksburg on TX 16 to FM 1323 on the right. Follow it about 3 miles east to the hamlet of Willow City. Turn left onto Willow City Loop. The road soon reaches the scenic part, a viewpoint overlooking a valley below and some sizable hills rising above. In a good year the valley below will be covered with bluebonnets. Slow down and watch carefully as you descend into the valley. Bluebonnets will become more common. Stop and shoot when you see a composition that appeals. Some large live oaks along the road add to the area’s beauty.

In about 3 miles the road turns west into a surprisingly deep canyon, probably the most scenic part of the drive. Blooming yuccas here often add variety to the bluebonnets carpeting the ground. After the road climbs out of the canyon to the west, the terrain flattens out, but the flowers can still be good all the way to TX 16. White prickly poppies are often mixed in with the bluebonnets here. Both sunny and cloudy days work for the flowers. When it’s cloudy, shoot narrower, closer compositions that don’t include much sky.

Directions: The Willow City Loop is just northeast of Fredericksburg, as described above. Fredericksburg has many restaurants and motels.
